Eats Darkness by Apostle of Hustle
LABEL: Arts & Crafts
Whether Andrew Whiteman was looking to make something so incredibly fun to listen to may be a question for the ages, but Apostle of the Hustle continues to be enjoyable music even when it gets into ponderous matters. It could be the nearly frenetic guitar, the Spanish infusion in the music, or maybe it’s just a fun name to tell people. Hopefully it’s not the last or my faux-hipster cred will be absolutely shattered.
Eats Darkness has to fill a big pair of shoes after National Anthem of Nowhere in 2007, which was a sublime album and of course the natural group of fans from Broken Social Scene who are just not sure about the other projects. Ultimately it’s unlikely that they are going to be either blown away or disappointed. The album is a strong piece that falls short of being amazing. And there is nothing really wrong with that.
The guitar licks are everything you would hope for, the composition works well together and the songs are polished. The album uses a few short interludes, in some ways composed more like a meal with apertif and digestif worked amidst the more meaty morsels, to keep your attention focused. The songs have a good ability to stick in your head—for better or worse—and it could make fans of the band's playlists for quite some time.
