Extra Golden is everything Vampire Weekend wishes they could be. Comprised of two members of now-defunct indie band Golden and a pair of musicians from Kenya, this quartet's second full-length release shows them going in a slightly new direction. Whereas 2006's Ok-Oyot System and 2007's Hera Ma Nono combined Kenyan benga (a thoroughly guitar-focused music) with classic rock songcrafting, Thank You Very Quickly adds a new sound to the mix—Southern rock. Allman-esque breaks punctuate the album, as well as the prevalence of slide guitar licks on a couple tracks, lending a smoky, growling tone to the proceedings. That swampy Southern influence is accentuated by some truly crazy drumming from Onyango Woud Omari, and the whole thing melts down into some jangly, bouncy, messed up mosaic of guitar and drums, then explodes back out into six catchy, well-crafted tunes. Who needs an Ivy League education, anyway?
