The King Khan & BBQ Show

Invisible Girl by The King Khan & BBQ Club
LABEL: In the Red Records

When the "Animal Party" single came out, I was excited King Khan & BBQ were getting weirder. The song is the story of King Khan is sitting home on a Saturday night and a pig knocks on his door with other animals to party. "So there I was in my house with twelve chickens, three elephants, five pigs, eight monkeys, two cows and a zebra," King Khan says. I hoped this song would be a platform for a really weird album, even for these guys, but it's not. The Khan and BBQ Show wimped out on Invisible Girl.

Now if I ever said this to King Khan to his face, I would probably get bashed in the face with the back of his guitar, something I have seen him do to a heckler at a show before. But please, King Khan, let me explain myself. On 2005's King Khan and BBQ Show and 2006's What's for Dinner? you guys turn overused roots rock riffs into something new and frenzied. Sure you had slow dancing ballads about love, but you also had kick ass headbangers about zombies and hate. Maybe life is treating you well and you forgot how to get angry, but when I listen to Invisible Girl, I'm bored.

There are a couple songs worth listening to. "Tastebuds" is the most memorable song on the album. King Khan sings "Tastebuds on my cock....Tastebuds on your cunt....Tastebuds on your shit...Tastebuds on my nuts so I can taste up inside your butt." It's funny, but as the centerpiece of the album and name of the band's current tour, it lacks punch. The song will probably be amazing live. King Khan & BBQ Shows are one of the best live bands touring right now. That seems to be the overriding problem on this album. All these songs might be great live, but on record, I'm not having much fun and most of the time it doesn't sound like they are either.
