Manchester Orchestra - Means Everything to Nothing

As a rule, every album reviewed gets not just one listen but at least two. Three for a few that have been particularly in need of critical thought. My opinion of this release is proof that it’s an important measure well worth the time. The first listen to this band’s second effort originally earned a derisive sigh and very nearly was ignored completely, but that initial heavy judgment would hardly have been fair.

Manchester Orchestra falls into a category of bands that cause marked of division in the indie community—on a major label but taking heavily from the 'sound' of independents and have only reinforced their place in that category with some of their past tour-mates. Joe Chicarelli produced their sophomore album coming off of an impressive legacy, leading them into a harder, more intense place than their debut I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child. Not a complete transformation by any means but it does offer a distinct sound change to those who only have familiarity with their prior work.

They have all the pieces in place to have a good deal of success with their heavier sound and right associations, but in general the release is too prone to mainstream label style. One or two 'single' tracks, one or two interesting deep cuts and then a lot of filler. A product of single culture, they come off better than a first judgment but aren't going to be getting repeated listens anytime soon.
